What Is a Macronutrient?

The word macronutrient simply means a nutrient your body needs in large amounts to function. There are three: carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Together, they supply all the calories (energy) in your food. Vitamins and minerals, by contrast, are micronutrients — needed in much smaller quantities.
